Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons presenteert de tentoonstelling If we remain silent, een voorstel van Ana Bravo Pérez voor een feministisch, dekoloniaal anti-monument ter nagedachtenis aan vrouwelijke sociale leiders in de frontlinie van de klimaatcrisis in Abya Yala. De titel van dit project is ontleend aan een citaat van wijlen Cristina Bautista Taquinás, een inheemse sociale leider uit Cauca (Colombia), die de woorden sprak: “Si nos quedamos callados nos matan. Y si hablamos también. Entonces, hablamos” tijdens een demonstratie in oktober 2019, de dag voordat ze werd vermoord. Dit citaat vertaalt: “Als we zwijgen, zullen ze ons vermoorden. En als we spreken ook. Vandaar dat wij spreken.” De tentoonstelling vormt een gedenkteken voor Cristina Bautista Taquinás en vele inheemse, Afro-Colombiaanse en andere vrouwelijke sociale leiders en landverdedigers die hun leven verloren tijdens het beschermen van hun leefomgeving. If we remain silent is een eerbetoon aan hun vitale werk om ecologische vernietiging tegen te gaan en gemeenschappen, gebieden en levensondersteunende systemen te beschermen.
De tentoonstelling is het resultaat van een meerjarig onderzoek van kunstenaar Ana Bravo Pérez en curator Joram Kraaijeveld naar de mogelijkheid om een feministisch, dekoloniaal anti-monument te ontwikkelen. If we remain silent is een delicaat, generatief gedenkteken dat voortkomt uit co-creatie door een diaspora die zich verzet tegen het uitwissen van de herinnering aan vrouwen die vochten tegen de verwoesting van de aarde. Het is een bottom-up voorstel dat het idee oproept van een monument om bij te dragen aan een levend, collectief geheugen om verdwijning door koloniaal geweld tegen te gaan.

Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons presents the exhibition If we remain silent, a proposal by Ana Bravo Pérez for a feminist, decolonial anti-monument commemorating women social leaders on the frontlines of the climate crisis in Abya Yala. The title of this project is taken from a quote by the late Cristina Bautista Taquinás, an indigenous social leader from Cauca (Colombia), who spoke the words, “Si nos quedamos callados nos matan. Y si hablamos también. Entonces, hablamos” during a demonstration in October 2019, the day before she was assassinated. This quote translates: “If we remain silent, they will kill us. And if we speak, too. Hence we speak.” The exhibition forms a memorial to Cristina Bautista Taquinás and many indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and other women social leaders and environmentalists who lost their lives while defending their lands. If we remain silent honors their vital work to oppose environmental destruction and to protect communities, territories, and life support systems.
The exhibition results from a long-term project by artist Ana Bravo Pérez and curator Joram Kraaijeveld researching the possibility of developing a feminist, decolonial anti-monument. If we remain silent is a delicate, generative memorial grown from co-creation by a diaspora working against the erasure of memory of women who fought against the ongoing destruction of the earth. It is a bottom-up proposal that evokes the idea of a monument to contribute to a living, collective memory to counter elimination through colonial violence.
