I invite you to come closer
What happens when we let go of control and focus less on perfection? By embracing chance, we open ourselves to new and unexpected possibilities that can challenge our boundaries.
As a visual artist, I am exploring unique images through the camera obscura. The camera obscura has been around for centuries and was used by scientists and artists such as Da Vinci and Vermeer to assist them in their creative process. In 2021, I constructed my own ultra-large camera obscura, measuring 2 x 2 x 2 meters.
Entering the camera obscura in complete darkness, cutting, and hanging the light-sensitive paper using only my sense of touch is an intense experience. Both control and letting go are crucial in my
artistic practice. Time also plays a significant role: a stretch of time is captured on a single sheet of light-sensitive paper. I sometimes intervene during exposure or during development, which I do in my darkroom using a color reversal process, producing a unique, one-of-a-kind photograph. There are no negatives, no digital files, and no postproduction. You must accept the photograph as it is; it cannot be retaken or reprinted, which presents a challenge in our makeable world.
The creative process leaves traces in the photographs, prompting a different way of viewing. As you come closer, you can discover the beauty in the details and small anomalies that will ignite your imagination.
