“Shanghai Dreams” toont de innovatieve olieverfschilderijen van kunstenaar Zhai Xuanhong op dimbare verlichte polycarbonaatpanelen. Na jaren van creatief experimenteren slaagt hij erin om traditionele olieverfmedia succesvol te combineren met de lichtgevende media van het postindustriële tijdperk in deze unieke vorm van artistieke expressie.
Zhai (geboren in 1987) studeerde af aan de afdeling Olieverfschilderen van de Sichuan Fine Art Academy. De accumulatie van lagen olieverf is een techniek die de kunstenaar consequent in zijn werk heeft toegepast. Deze ingewikkelde methode, terwijl ze de diepte en driedimensionaliteit van het kunstwerk vormgeeft, introduceert tegelijkertijd een kortstondig gevoel van onscherpte door voortdurende herhaling en accumulatie. Het kunstwerk drukt menselijke verlangens uit naar zowel materie als emotie, afwisselend tussen levendige, oogverblindende schoonheid en zachte, subtiele en diepgaande zwart-wit grijstinten, waardoor we de complexiteit van het geïndustrialiseerde stadsleven ervaren. Het gebruik van het verlichte paneel dient als een voortzetting van het verhaal tussen dag en nacht. Shanghai, de stad waar hij woont, staat bekend als de “Stad Die Nooit Slaapt”, waar de nachten en dromen lijken versierd door lichten. Het verlichte paneel zorgt voor een achtergrondverlichting, waardoor het canvas halftransparant wordt en de kunstenaar nieuwe methoden van kleurcontrole en het creëren van diverse licht- en schaduwveranderingen verleent. Technisch gezien is deze methode een omgekeerde vorm in vergelijking met het creëren van een oppervlak op doek. Dikkere composities vallen meer op bij daglicht, maar kunnen ’s nachts verdwijnen wanneer ze worden verlicht door achtergrondverlichting. De instelbare verlichtingsveranderingen stellen de kunstenaar in staat om kleuren en texturen op meerdere niveaus toe te voegen, waardoor de diepte en variatie van het kunstwerk worden verrijkt.

Zhai (born 1987) graduated from Sichuan Fine Art Academy Oil Painting department. The accumulation of layers of oil paint is a technique the artist has consistently employed in his work. This intricate method, while shaping the depth and three-dimensionality of the artwork, simultaneously introduces a brief sense of defocus through continuous repetition and accumulation. The artwork expresses human desires for both material and emotion, alternating between vivid, dazzling beauty and soft, subtle, and profound black-and-white grayscale tones, all of which make us feel the complexity of industrialized urban life. His works also serve as profound metaphors for industrial society and modern cities, where industrial civilization brings wealth and innovation but also accompanies the endless expansion of human desires.
The use of illuminated panel serves as a continuation of the narrative between day and night. Shanghai, the city where he resides, is known as the “City That Never Sleeps,” its nights and dreams seemingly embellished by lights. The illuminated panel provides a backlight effect, rendering the canvas semi-transparent and granting the artist new methods of color control and the creation of diverse light and shadow changes. Technically, this method is a reverse form compared to canvas surface creation. Thicker compositions stand out more prominently in natural daylight but may disappear into the night when illuminated by background lights. The adjustable lighting changes allow the artist to add colors and textures on multiple levels, enriching the depth and variation of the artwork.
