Ienke Kastelein (1956) is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar. De laatste jaren bestaat haar praktijk onder andere uit reflectieve wandelingen waarbij ze een interactie aangaat met haar deelnemers. Ze noemt het Walking Performances: wandelingen als voorstelling waarin deelnemers, omgeving en tijd het materiaal zijn.
Het atelier van Kastelein zit in een voormalige school in het Abraham Dolehof, een bijzondere binnentuin in het hart van Utrecht. Het stille hofje hoort bij het Sint Ursulaklooster dat in 1412 door de rijke koopman Abraham Dole werd gesticht. Voor CareFull ontwikkelde Kastelein een van haar performatieve wandelingen, waar je ieder weekend aan deel kunt nemen.
Kastelein: “In deze ‘drenteling’ komen ervaringen van ruimte en tijd bij elkaar. Het achterliggende idee is dat ons geheugen zich niet alleen bevindt in ons lichaam, brein en DNA, maar ook in de wereld om ons heen. We spiegelen ons aan de stad in de binnentuin van het Abraham Dolehof, een plek geworteld in de geschiedenis met een eeuwenoude plataan, moeder van het hof. We voeren een gesprek in verschillende talen: woorden, geuren, klanken, bewegingen. Stille conversaties worden afgewisseld met gesproken woord, ruiken met proeven, lopen met zitten. Elke keer krijgt het gesprek zijn eigen tempo en ritme, dat ontstaat onder invloed van weer en wind, de geest van de dag, de aanwezigen, terloopse ontmoetingen. Het is als het stellen van een vraag: wat het betekent om ergens te zijn?, met elkaar een ruimte te delen?, in de stad, als één lichaam, in samenspraak met de bomen en planten, met de elementen, nietig in het licht van de tijd, 900 jaar Utrecht in de bocht van een rivier – misschien zijn wij wel het water in de bedding van een rivier van tijd.”
De wandeling laat sporen na als een geheugenkaart die fungeert als een nieuwe mantel voor Ursula. Aan het einde van de wandelingen is er mogelijkheid om te reflecteren.

Ienke Kastelein is a multidisciplinary artist. In recent years, her practice has included reflective walks where she interacts with her participants.
Kastelein’s studio is located in a former school in Abraham Dolehof. A unique courtyard garden in the heart of Utrecht. You almost have to know it to find it. The peaceful courtyard belongs to the St. Ursula’s Monastery founded in 1412 by the wealthy merchant Abraham Dole.
She has developed one of her performative walks for CareFull. In explanation, she says: ‘We mirror the city in the courtyard garden of the Abraham Dolehof, a place rooted in history with an ancient Platanus tree, the matriarch of the court, presiding. Through this ‘meandering’, experiences of space and time coalesce in a natural way. The underlying idea is that our memory is not only rooted in our body/brain/DNA, but also in the world around us.
We have a conversation in different mediums – words, smells, sounds, movements. Silent conversations alternate with spoken word, smelling with tasting, walking with sitting. Each walk has its own rhythm and pace, which arises under the influence of weather, the mood of the day, those present and casual encounters.
It’s like asking a question: what does it mean to be somewhere, to share a space with each other? In the city, as one body, in concert with the trees and plants, with the elements, a void in the light of time, 900 years of Utrecht in the bend of a river – maybe we are the water in the bed of a river of time.’
At the end of this performative walk there is the opportunity to reflect, to leave traces as a kind of memento that acts as a new cloak for Ursula.
